The origin of the celebration of A Rapa in this Galician region, later, seems to be connected, according to oral tradition, to an offering by some of the neighbors of the town to San Lorenzo, in order to mitigate the effects of the bubonic plague. There is evidence of several episodes of this disease in the area since the mid-sixteenth century and are collected in the “Tumbo E” of the Cathedral of Santiago.
